“絲綢之路”是指起始于古代中國，連接亞洲、非洲和歐洲的古代路上商業貿易路線。狹義的絲綢之路一般指陸上絲綢之路。廣義上講又分為陸上絲綢之路和海上絲綢之路。

“陸上絲綢之路”是連接中國腹地與歐洲諸地的陸上商業貿易通道，形成于于公元前2世紀與公元1世紀間，直至16世紀仍保留使用，是一條東方與西方之間經濟、政治、文化進行交流的主要道路。漢武帝派張騫出使西域形成其基本干道。

它以西漢時期長安為起點（東漢時為洛陽），經河西走廊到敦煌。從敦煌起分為南北兩路：南路從敦煌經樓蘭、于闐、莎車，穿越蔥嶺今帕米爾到大月氏、安息，往西到達條支、大秦；北路從敦煌到交河、龜茲、疏勒，穿越蔥嶺到大宛，往西經安息到達大秦。它的最初作用是運輸中國古代出產的絲綢。
