Chinese、Japanese這些形容詞格式,是源自古英語的構詞法。
在古英語中,名詞的變格(declension)中分為三類,1,強變格,包括一切詞干以元音結尾的詞;2,弱變格,包括一切以輔音-n結尾的名詞;3,小變格,包括所有詞干以其他輔音結尾的詞。古英語名詞的變格包括主格、生格(類似于現在的所有格)、與格、賓格和工具格。
所以,China(在英文中最初的拼寫是Cin、Chin,來源于拉丁文的Sina)、Japan、Sweden、Den(丹、丹麥)這些名詞屬于弱變格,需要加-ese變為生格,Chinese,Japanese,Swediese(后演變為Swedish)、Denese(后演變為 Danish)。Korea、Norwege(挪威)的詞干以元音結尾,屬于強變格,需要加-n變為生格,Korean,Norwegian。當然,有些地名的古代拼寫和現代拼寫不一樣,這一點需要加以注意。
還有,古英語的語法和現代英語有很大的區別。比如說,在古英語中,名詞分為陰性、陽性、中性,需要注意的是,這里的性是語法性別,不是自然性別。以元音a結尾的詞是陽性,比如“mona”(月亮),以e結尾的詞是陰性,比如“sonne”(太陽)。妻子“wif”是中性,女人“wifman”是陽性,因為詞尾后綴man是陽性。這是名詞的性。
其他說法:
英語單詞不僅可以通過加前綴構成新詞,也可加后綴構成新詞。后綴通常會改變單詞的詞性,構成意義相近的其他詞性;少數后綴還會改變詞義,變為與原來詞義相反的新詞。
(1)構成名詞的后綴常用的有-ence,-(e)r/ -or (從事某事的人),-ese (某地人),-ess (雌性),-ful (一……),-ian (精通……的人),-ist (專業人員),-ment (性質;狀態),-ness (性質;狀態),-tion(動作;過程)等。例如:
