來，一邊站著的是一個身材高大須發銀白的肖伯納，一邊站著的是身材弱小頭發蓬□的魯迅，兩相對照，實在不稱，身量不稱作品的數量分量也不稱。這種比較倒實在有胡攪蠻纏之嫌。
在文學的研究方面，魯迅的唯一值得稱道的是他的那本“中國小說使略”，在中國的小說方面他是下過一點研究的功夫的，這一本書恐怕至今還不失為在這方面的好書。我以為，至少這一本書應該提前解禁，準其流通。此外，我看不出他有什么別的貢獻。有人說，他譯過不少歐洲弱小民族的文學作品。我的知識太有限，我尚不敢批評那些所謂“弱小民族”的文學究竟如何。不過我想，魯迅的翻譯是從日文轉譯的，因此對于各民族的文學未必有適當的了解，并且魯迅之翻譯此類文學其動機可能是出于同情，對被壓迫民族的同情，至于其本身的文學價值，他未必十分注意。
五四以來，新文藝的作者很多，而真有成就的并不多，像魯迅這樣的也還不多見。他可以有更可觀的成就，可惜他一來死去太早，二來他沒有健全的思想基礎，以至于被共產黨的潮流卷去，失去了文藝的立場。一個文學家自然不能整天的吟風弄月，自然要睜開眼睛看看他的周圍，自然要發泄他的胸中的積憤與塊壘，但是，有一點頗為重要，他須要“沉靜的觀察人生，并觀察人生的整體。”（To see life steadilyand see it whole）。這一句話是英國批評家阿諾得Matthew Arnold批評英國人巢塞Chaucer時所說的話。他說巢塞沒有能做到這一點，他對人生的觀察是零星的局部的膚淺的。我如果要批評魯迅，我也要借用這一句名言。魯迅的態度不夠冷靜，他感情用事的時候多，所以他立腳不穩，反對他的以及有計劃的給他捧場的，都對他發生了不必要的影響。他有文學家應有的一支筆，但他沒有文學家所應有的胸襟與心理準備。他寫了不少的東西，態度只是一個偏激。
